The Benefits of Atheism?

Simply put, what are the benefits of atheism?

You live your life with no one watching out for you, no one caring about you, no one making you part of their plan.

Then you die, and that's it?

That's all there is?

Can someone explain to me why anyone would be an atheist?

I understand some people have hang ups about the church, or about certain things that have been done under the banner of "religion," but what does atheism have to offer?

If you look at your life on a singular, personal level, I just don't see the benefit.

I know many atheists that say they are too rational to believe in God, too logical to believe in the hocus pocus of religion.

You are too rational to avoid universal evidence that puts doubts in all of our beliefs?

So you stick to your atheist guns?

Why?

Why would you turn away from a loving, caring God that wants the best for you, that accepts everyone, that is the definition of love?

What is so alluring about atheism, and why would you try to convince me to change my ways?

Why would you try to make me give up my faith in a better world and loving God and join the ranks of an atheist and believe in nothing?

If this is it, and there is nothing more to live for, why would I want to be a part of that?

I just don't see the upside of atheism or the downside of believing in God.

Maybe I just don't have enough faith to be an atheist.

I don't know about you, but I can't choose my beliefs. Benefits don't enter into it.

You live your life with no one watching out for you, no one caring about you, no one making you part of their plan.

What? Other people can't do these things? Are you a hermit?

Then you die, and that's it?

Having never died, I can't say for sure, but that appears to be the way life goes -- your existence after death is likely to be the same as it was before you were born.

However, atheism doesn't require such a belief, as atheism simply means "not a theist." There are atheists who believe in reincarnation, for example, especially in India where reincarnation is a common idea which isn't always connected to belief in gods.

Can someone explain to me why anyone would be an atheist?

Lack of reason to believe any gods exist. That's about all it takes.

I understand some people have hang ups about the church, or about certain things that have been done under the banner of "religion," but what does atheism have to offer?

Nothing. Not even toaster ovens.

Do you pick whichever religion promises the most "goodies"? I suggest you steer clear of conmen like Madoff if so. Conmen love to make promises, as long as they never have to pay off.

If you look at your life on a singular, personal level, I just don't see the benefit.

There isn't one.

I know many atheists that say they are too rational to believe in God, too logical to believe in the hocus pocus of religion.

Which religion? There are quite a few out there, you know. Do you believe in all of them? Or are you an atheist with regard to all the gods in all other religions?

You are too rational to avoid universal evidence that puts doubts in all of our beliefs?

I have no idea what you're talking about here.

So you stick to your atheist guns?

Why?

Because I see no reason to believe any gods exist.

Why would you turn away from a loving, caring God that wants the best for you, that accepts everyone, that is the definition of love?

Is this the god where you end up in "eternal torment" based on a mistaken opinion?

What is so alluring about atheism, and why would you try to convince me to change my ways?

I'm not trying to convince you.

Why would you try to make me give up my faith in a better world and loving God and join the ranks of an atheist and believe in nothing?

Atheists believe in all sorts of things. Gods just aren't among them.

If this is it, and there is nothing more to live for, why would I want to be a part of that?

Why wouldn't you be? You need an offstage, omnipotent being for something?

I just don't see the upside of atheism or the downside of believing in God.

Well, go with whatever religion makes the biggest and best promises, then. And forget what I said about avoiding conmen, you're knee-deep already.

Maybe I just don't have enough faith to be an atheist.

Wow, did you just make that up??

Well no, you didn't.

If you think NOT believing in magical, invisible superbeings takes more "faith" than believing in magical, invisible superbeings, I assume you also believe in elves, fairies, leprechauns, ghosts, etc. After all, it would take more faith not to believe in these, wouldn't it?

First off, I’d like to apologize if my blog seemed like a personal attack in any way. You seem like a smart guy, so I’m going to respond to what you wrote, I hope you get a chance to read it.

CS: Simply put, what are the benefits of atheism

BW: I don't know about you, but I can't choose my beliefs. Benefits don't enter into it.

CS: I disagree, I think you consciously choose what to believe in, especially on a topic as big as the presence of God.

CS: You live your life with no one watching out for you, no one caring about you, no one making you part of their plan.

BW: What? Other people can't do these things? Are you a hermit?

CS: Without the love of Christ you miss out on being part of an eternal plan, God will still have you play a part, but if you don’t search for what that part is, you’ll miss out on a lot. There is nothing like the love of Christ, sadly you won’t know until you experience it.

CS: Then you die, and that's it?

BW: Having never died, I can't say for sure, but that appears to be the way life goes -- your existence after death is likely to be the same as it was before you were born.

CS: This is possible, but what if there is an afterlife? I urge you to think about it, and look into it. There is nothing to lose with following Christ.

BW: However, atheism doesn't require such a belief, as atheism simply means "not a theist." There are atheists who believe in reincarnation, for example, especially in India where reincarnation is a common idea which isn't always connected to belief in gods.

CS: I don’t want to argue about semantics.

CS: Can someone explain to me why anyone would be an atheist?

BW: Lack of reason to believe any gods exist. That's about all it takes.

CS: There is a lot of evidence out there that points to a creator and ever present God. I hope you look into it, if you are curious check out The Case for Christ, The Case for a Creator, or The Case for Faith, all by Lee Strobel.

CS: I understand some people have hang ups about the church, or about certain things that have been done under the banner of "religion," but what does atheism have to offer?

BW: Nothing. Not even toaster ovens.

CS: I thought that was pretty funny.

BW: Do you pick whichever religion promises the most "goodies"? I suggest you steer clear of conmen like Madoff if so. Conmen love to make promises, as long as they never have to pay off.

CS: I didn’t pick my religion based on perks, I looked at my beliefs, questioned them, dug for the truth, and that ended up solidifying my belief in Christ. I strongly encourage everyone to investigate their faith, it is too important of a subject to simply disregard.

CS: If you look at your life on a singular, personal level, I just don't see the benefit.

BW: There isn't one.

CS: I know many atheists that say they are too rational to believe in God, too logical to believe in the hocus pocus of religion.

BW: Which religion? There are quite a few out there, you know. Do you believe in all of them? Or are you an atheist with regard to all the gods in all other religions?

CS: I don’t believe in other religions because I have looked into them, and made an informed decision.

CS: You are too rational to avoid universal evidence that puts doubts in all of our beliefs?

BW: I have no idea what you're talking about here.

CS: I already addressed this earlier, I’m no scientist and I’m sure I can’t articulate their arguments that well, but please do some research on Christianity, or anything for that matter.

CS: So you stick to your atheist guns?

BW: Why?
Because I see no reason to believe any gods exist.

CS: There is a reason. There is a loving Father out there who made you, needs you, and wants you. He wants the best for you, and sacrificed for you so you can have eternal life. He is offering the free gift of salvation, all you have to do is accept it.

CS: Why would you turn away from a loving, caring God that wants the best for you, that accepts everyone, that is the definition of love?

BW: Is this the god where you end up in "eternal torment" based on a mistaken opinion?

CS: Sadly, Hell is a reality. It’s there because we all screw up, we all miss the mark, and when we are too proud to come to God and realize this, that’s where we go. But it doesn’t have to be like that. It is more than a mistaken opinion, it is living in defiance of God in the face of repeated occurrences to come to Him. I hope this encourages you to seek Him, and investigate Jesus’ claims. He loves you and wants you to come to Him. Please, just check it out.

CS: What is so alluring about atheism, and why would you try to convince me to change my ways?

BW: I'm not trying to convince you.

CS: Why would you try to make me give up my faith in a better world and loving God and join the ranks of an atheist and believe in nothing?

BW: Atheists believe in all sorts of things. Gods just aren't among them.

CS: I’m talking about eternal beliefs.

CS: If this is it, and there is nothing more to live for, why would I want to be a part of that?

BW: Why wouldn't you be? You need an offstage, omnipotent being for something?

CS: There is so much more out there with God, more than you could ever find without Him.

CS: I just don't see the upside of atheism or the downside of believing in God.

BW: Well, go with whatever religion makes the biggest and best promises, then. And forget what I said about avoiding conmen, you're knee-deep already.

CS: That hurts man, I don’t think Christianity is a con.

CS: Maybe I just don't have enough faith to be an atheist.

BW: Wow, did you just make that up??
Well no, you didn't.
If you think NOT believing in magical, invisible superbeings takes more "faith" than believing in magical, invisible superbeings, I assume you also believe in elves, fairies, leprechauns, ghosts, etc. After all, it would take more faith not to believe in these, wouldn't it?

CS: I think you are missing the point, this “superbeing” has scientific evidence pointing straight towards Him, and a world changing history supporting His existence. None of these other things have that sort of evidence behind them, nor the personal mark that is evident in the lives of every God follower.

If you look into life after death, and the existence of God, I’m sure it will raise some questions. That is all I’m asking you to do. Look into it, investigate for yourself, and see if what I’m talking about is garbage or the truth. If Christ is all that he says He is, then you won’t want to miss out on what He is doing. Please, just make sure your beliefs are built on a solid foundation, rather than disregard.

Brian:

You are not alone. There are many atheists out there. However, there are also millions of rational, educated people who believe in God. Christianity historically has not given a lot of goodies for its followers. The founders of Christ in the first century were so convinced that Jesus resurrected and was God, that they died horrible deaths for their beliefs. The Romans did not crucify their own citizens because it was deemed too cruel. Christians around the world today are tortured and killed for their beliefs (see China, Sudan, Kurdistan). The fact is that they are willing to risk it all on the claims of God being who he says he is. The promise of a relationship with God and eternity in his presence is worth it. Check it out for yourself. Voice of the Martyrs is a site where you see modern day persecution of Christians. Don't be too quick to rule out God- I think you will be surprised at what you find if you seek him out.

I usually do not comment, however after looking at a few of
the remarks here "The Benefits of Atheism?". I do have
